This Sunday we celebrate our dads! Many times, that celebration includes gathering around a grill, usually manned by dad, with beers in hand for a casual gathering. While there is nothing wrong with these simple parties, we thought-up a few more no-fuss ideas to honor dads of all types.

Being from Colorado, we understand that there are a lot of dads who enjoy spending time outside in our picturesque state. For this type of dad do something that will compel the whole family to stay outside doing the things dad loves for the day. Go on a family friendly hike, find a new bike trail, or pack up the fishing poles and take the crew to his favorite fishing spot. Pack a picnic lunch inspired by the Rocky Mountains, bring along foods like smoked trout spread, roast beef sandwiches with horseradish mayo, an herb potato salad, and Colorado’s best natural sweet strawberries – the fruit in season now (peaches are coming soon!). Pack along a thermos with to-go cups and pour a local Colorado whiskey cocktail for the crowd.

Sports Guy

Baseball-Glove-and-BatIf your dad would rather be watching his favorite team play than doing just about anything else, bring the game to him! Have a mock game of dad’s favorite sport and allow dad to make a few special rules for the day. Look up fun, unknown facts online about dads’ beloved sport or team and challenge the family to a little competitive trivia—keep score and allow the winner, hopefully dad, to be free from a chore for the week. Serve stadium style hot-dogs and cold beers, or food inspired from the home-state of your dad’s favorite team such as New England Clam Chowder and Sam Adams beer for the Red Sox.

Is your dad a movie buff, or do you find yourself groaning every time he quotes the same one-liners from his favorite comedy? If so, do the unexpected for dad and use his fav flick for inspiration. Serve food and play games that match the movie, such as an Italian spread for The Godfather with a fierce game of bocce ball in the yard, or chuck wagon barbeque for Blazing Saddles with a playful game of horseshoes, or serve martinis and play spy with squirt guns for James Bond. Ask your family members to dress the part for the day and call dad by his favorite character. At the end of the day, invite dad to sit down and relax in front of his theme movie while the family cleans up.
