Sadly, the last long weekend of summer is upon us.  With fall days ahead and winter coming up on us faster than we would like to admit, take advantage of relaxing weather this Labor Day weekend and celebrate like you only can in the summertime.  Aside from the always-welcome patriotic decorations, BBQs and yard games, we thought up three other ways to honor the holiday and the last days of summer.

#1: Honor Civil  red white blue ice cream cone Workers

Since Labor Day is all about honoring the hard working people of our country, honor our civil workers by asking your family, friends, and neighbors to gather dressed as their favorite hard working American public servant such as firefighters, school teachers, army personnel and paramedics.  Skip the over-crowded town parade and have your group strut around your backyard. Afterwards, an ice cream social is the perfect nostalgic treat.  Have a make-your-own-sundae bar, root beer floats, and popsicles—an instant, and easy party! For something extra, create a playlist of work-related songs, Working 9-5, Money for Nothing, Hard Days Night…. Get creative, this is sure to give everyone a good laugh!

#2: “Wear White Only” Labor Day Party

Any fashionable person knows the classic rule: no white after Labor Day.  So why not send our white attire off with a bang?  Host a “Wear White Only” Labor Day party.  Ask guests to wear their best summer whites.  Decorate with white linens, use white flowers like mums, roses, and lilies for centerpieces.  Hang white balloons, or paper lanterns from tree branches. In the evening turn on white outdoor lights, and light white candles.  To take the theme further, serve white summer drinks such as piña colada, white wine sangria, or toasted coconut margaritas. For foods serve popcorn, grilled white pizzas, white asparagus, or mac and cheese with gruyere. White sweets could anything from white chocolate covered fruit, French vanilla bean ice cream, or white chocolate mousse.

#3: Summer Themclam+bakees

Labor Day weekend is the un-official last weekend of summer (summer truly ends on September 22nd, the day before the first day of fall) and we love the idea of squeezing in our favorite summer theme one last time!  Think of your favorite summer activity and build your theme around it.  Love going to the beach?  Have a beach party!  Complete with tropical attire, and beachy foods and drinks.  Enjoy summer camping? Have a camp-themed party with a back yard fire pit.  Cook hot dogs and S’ mores over the fire, drink beer from the bottle (don’t worry, its Labor Day you are supposed to take it easy) and reminisce about your summer. Couldn’t make it to the Northeast for a summer clambake this year?  Host your own!

However you choose to celebrate this weekend, have a wonderful (and relaxing) Labor Day! ~ Serendipity Catering
