There are so many options when throwing summer parties. One of our favorites is a Hawaiian luau. It can be easy or elaborate–how far you want to go with this is up to you!
Turn Your Backyard into a Tropical Paradise
Use tiki lights randomly placed in the grass, dress tables in grass skirts, scatter seashells over the tablescapes, float candles and flowers in water in large flat bowls or, if you are lucky, a pond or pool (even a blow-up kids pool). Hand out leis and straw hats to your guests as they walk in. Aloha!
The Word Luau Translates to Feast
Think fresh, tropical, easy and lots of food when planning the menu. Try food on skewers, including tropical fruits like pineapple and mango, chicken or beef satays, and seared Ahi tuna. If you can’t get your hands on a whole pig to roast, simply offer pulled pork sandwiches with pineapple. For sides, traditional macaroni salad is a luau staple. Other authentic ideas are coconut rice or a green salad with pineapple-bacon vinaigrette. Sweet Island endings are coconut cake, pineapple upside down cake, or chocolate macadamia nut cookies.
Mai Tai’s are of course, a Hawaiian favorite. Make ahead of time and serve in a punch bowl with floating flowers and pineapple slices. Pina Coladas are just as popular if you don’t mind running the blender all night! No matter what is on your cocktail menu, you can always place paper umbrellas in the drinks so everyone feels like they are in paradise.
